How to change the map language?

You may need to change the map language to accommodate your core visitors. This is easy to do, and takes just a little bit of time to set up. You can do this by creating a custom map style.

First you will need to login to Mapbox.com or create a new account if you haven’t done so yet. You will need to navigate to the Mapbox Studio by clicking your avatar in the top right of the Mapbox dashboard and selecting “Studio,” or you can click this link here.

Once you are on the Studio page, you will want to create a new map style. You can do this by clicking the arrow attached to the “New Style” button. Let’s select “Classic Template” from the dropdown menu.

You will be presented with a short list of template styles. Feel free to choose the one you’d like to start with. For this example, you can choose “Streets,” and then you can click the “Customize Streets” button at the bottom of the modal.

Now you are taken to the style editor for this template. First thing you want to do is make sure you have the Layers tab selected at the top left.

From there you can click the first option in the Layers sidebar called “Place Labels.” This will open an additional panel to adjust a wide range of options. The option you want to change is “Language,” which you can find towards the bottom under “Settlement subdivisions.”

Now you can selected the language you want for all Place Labels. In the example below you can see we chose “Spanish.”

You can also change the Worldview (if applicable), which might adjust/change some of the lines and borders, but is not required, nor will it have any effect on the actual map language.

You will want to repeat this process for all layers in the sidebar. Some will be adjusted together if they are relevant to each other, which helps make the process a bit quicker.

Once you’ve finished changing the language for all the layers, you can click the “Publish” button in the top right corner of the editor. You will see a modal where you can preview the changes you made. You can then click the “Publish” button once again in the modal to publish your changes.

Next you can click the “Share” button in the top right of the editor next to the “Publish” button you previously clicked. This will allow us to grab the Style URL, which you will need for Jetboost. Once you see the modal, towards the bottom under “Developer Resources,” you will see the generated “Style URL.” Click the copy button to the right of the URL, and then you can navigate back over to the Jetboost dashboard.

Back in the Jetboost dashboard, you can go into the Booster Editor for the CMS Map Booster you’re creating, and on the first page (“Settings”), in step 2 for selecting your map style, you can select the “Custom” option. Next you can paste the Style URL in the Custom Style URL field. You will see a preview of the map with the new language below step 3.

That is pretty much it! Once you’ve pasted the URL, scroll down and click the “Save” button to save your settings. Next you can go to your live site and refresh to see the updated map in your new language.
